I really appreciate the publisher reprinting this book about such an important subject but the way they did it is ridiculous. I can't understand why they didn't enlarge the print from the original so that it would be readable. Even wearing my over the counter reading glasses and using a magnifying glass there are pages that are unreadable. Some of the print is very light also. I plan to contact the publisher about it. It is an important work but it's a lot of work to read!Product details

The Mountain Meadows massacre Josiah Francis Gibbs 9781176866706 Books Reviews
This book had many dates, names of those involved, and other interesting facts. The book was not written in a way that most stories are; I felt it was mostly just dates, etc. I am a descendant of the Dunlap family, so the part about the three girls was quite interesting.
[NOTE This review pertains to the work itself, not to any one, particular ebook edition of it.]
This short, 1910 book by Josiah F. Gibbs concerns a comparatively little-known incident in American history that happened some 50 years earlier. In 1857, at the height of tensions between the U.S. and Brigham Young's powerful and expansive Mormon church, a wagon train passing through the territory (supposedly) angered some inhabitants with their anti-Mormon remarks. Not ones to turn the other cheek, church leaders (perhaps too literally adhering to Brigham Young's provocative threats demanding "blood atonement") incited local Paiute Indians to attack the train while it was encamped at a tranquil place known as Mountain Meadows. After a prolonged standoff (during which a young girl was shot and killed trying to obtain water from an adjacent spring), the members of the wagon train were promised they would not be harmed if they put down their weapons and surrendered to the Mormons. They trustingly did, but as they marched away from their wagons in a neat line alongside their "rescuers," the command to "do your duty" rang out. Indians and Mormons alike then systematically slaughtered every man, woman, and child -- with the exception of some 18 of the very youngest, thought to be too young to ever be able to testify to the deaths of their parents and siblings. (Years later, some proved to be not as unaware of events as the Mormons had hoped they would be.)
The Indians alone were initially blamed, but suspicions were raised, and slowly, the truth (despite Mormon concealment) leaked out. It took 20 years for anyone to be brought to justice for the crime -- and even then, only as a political necessity, just ONE person (John Doyle Lee) was offered as a sacrificial lamb. In his first trial, an all-Mormon jury refused to convict him, so he was tried again, this time with the politically-desired result. Found guilty, he was executed by firing squad (quite fittingly, at Mountain Meadows).
This heart-rending account will make readers, in turn, saddened by the senseless killing of some 120+ innocents and outraged by the callousness and perfidy of their slayers. And though the dramatic events of this tragedy may seem like something out of a pulp western novel, the horrific truth is that an entire wagon train was wiped out and all traces if it were virtually obliterated!
Gibbs' very brief book (actually more of a pamphlet) is a serviceable (if sometimes convoluted) introduction to the subject, but newer, straight-forward, better-researched, more-detailed, full-length books about it have been written and are available for sale in the . (Just search under "Mountain Meadows Massacre.") But be especially discerning and, if possible, read more than one to get a complete and balanced treatment. It's not that today's books reflect Mormon bashing; on the contrary, many authors bend-over-backwards to be fair and objective. But what IS noticeable (now that Mormon involvement is no longer deniable) are the lengths some LDS authors and sympathizers (Walker & Turley and the much-praised Juanita Brooks among them) will still go to minimize Mormon participation and culpability (in part, by blaming the victims). NOTHING in the tense political atmosphere and NOTHING any member of that wagon train may have said or done could warrant or justify the total destruction of so many people. And whoever (singular, as in Brigham Young) incited the deed is just as guilty as those (plural) who did it, because John D. Lee obviously did not act alone. Many murderers escaped punishment, but neither they nor their families could ever escape their guilty memories (if not their consciences). This tragedy may not be widely-known, but it is definitely not forgotten by those who would still like to see the FULL truth of that appalling incident swept under the rug. Fortunately, books like this prevent that from happening.
I've read a number of accounts of this incident. Most were written better but this gets the idea accross albeit in a rather disjointed manner. Clearly a little one sided and a bit of an editorial but a reasonably decent intro to the incident. You'll want more but this is not a bad starting point.
I LEARNED A GREAT DEAL ABOUT THE LDS CHURCH AND NONE TOO IMPRESSIVE I MIGHT ADD. THE STORY OF THE "SCAPEGOAT" OF THIS MASSACRE IS VERY INTERESTING AND SHOWS THE DEPTH OF LOYALTY BETWEEN CHURCH MEMBERS OF THIS "SACRED" MASONIC ORDER, BY THE WAY, WHAT ABOUT WOMEN'S RIGHT'S?
Very good.
This was a well written book. To this date the Mormons will not take responsibility for their horrible crimes. I hope that people reading this book will read it and believe what the author has written. I recommend it to all.
